Glibenclamide and alcohol

Glibenclamide can induce an antabuse reaction with the alcohol contained in cough syrups, for example, even if the quantity ingested is small. This reaction is annoying but often minor, requiring only monitoring. However, alcohol intake must be stopped and glibenclamide treatment suspended for 24 hours. The dispensing pharmacist should be consulted systematically in the event of self-medication by patients receiving this treatment, in order to verify the absence of alcohol in the composition of the medication.
