Classification Systems in Müller-Weiss Disease : The Northern Irish Experience - 10/06/24
, Andrew Walls, FRCS (Tr & Orth) b, Matthew Lynch-Wong, MRCS bRésumé |
Maceira and Rochera’s 2004 classification of Müller-Weiss disease hinges solely on Méary’s angle. Although it describes pathomechanics well, it serves as a guide to neither treatment nor prognosis. The grouping system proposed by Wong-Chung et al. (Wong) in 2023 takes into account age of onset, previous evidence of a radiologically normal navicular, which joints are affected, the dorsoplantar talo-first metatarsal angle, and Méary’s angle. It directs arthrodesis surgery toward the joints involved. A combination of the Maceira stages and Wong groups may provide a universally acceptable classification system, which is indispensable for establishing gold standards of operative and nonoperative treatment.
