Developmental theories are fundamental to all methods of psychotherapy but are perhaps especially relevant to the practice of child and adolescent psychodynamic psychotherapy. To this end, it is important that practitioners be familiar with the benefits and challenges of the major theories of development. This article focuses on the use of development in the practice of psychodynamic theory with children and adolescents, summarizes 5 key developmental theories, and discusses using a case example how these theories influence treatment.
