Intensive Care Considerations for the Critically Ill Pregnant Patient - 04/08/25
, Michael Dombrowski, MD bRésumé |
Critical care of the pregnant patient requires a multidisciplinary approach. These patients can present a significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome should be readily recognized and treated on obstetric units. In cases of cardiopulmonary arrest, advanced life support care remains largely unchanged with only a few pregnancy-specific modifications. The maternal status should be prioritized as maternal well-being is a pre-requisite to ensure optimal neonatal outcomes. Stabilizing the mother will improve the fetal status in many cases. Critical, life-saving interventions should not be withheld from patients solely because of their pregnant status.
