Abstract |
The treatment of uterine fibroids (UFs) has sparked interest in phytotherapeutics as safer alternatives to synthetic agents. While synthetic drugs like relugolix offer rapid hormonal suppression, their long-term use often leads to adverse effects such as bone loss and endometrial instability, which necessitate combining phytocompounds to yield synergistic benefits and balancing potency with reduced side effects. However, emerging data from in-vitro and animal studies suggest that herbal and polyherbal phytocompounds i.e., apigenin, butein, coumestrol, curcumin, capsaicin, dehydroxyelephantopin, fisetin, kaempferol, resveratrol, silibinin, etc. in form of decoctions, teas, pills, and diet when standardized and delivered effectively, may provide comparable efficacy with better safety profiles. Additionally, acupuncture can manage hormonal levels through neuroendocrine modulation of estrogen, and progesterone via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortex axis (HPAA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (HPO) process for UFs remedy. Therefore, it is considerable to investigate if phytocompounds-acupuncture therapy approach could have better pharmacological benefit than 50−50% synthetic-phytocompound combination therapy and align better with patient preferences for hormonal balance and natural therapies.
