Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is the leading cause of post-neonatal mortality in the United States, claiming ∼3700 infants annually. There are significant race and ethnic disparities that vary by geographic region. Although much is known about SUID risk factors, progress in reducing SUID rates has been hampered by inconsistent application of diagnostic coding, lack of a national surveillance system, and low risk perception. These issues and promising progress in SUID surveillance and prevention are discussed.
