Malformations of cortical development are complex and diverse. They are an etiology for drug-resistant epilepsy, and their imaging presentation may be striking or quite subtle. There are multiple schemes to classify this pathology group. One of the most well known is to group disorders based on the type of embryologic error that leads to each malformation. They can also be grouped based on imaging appearance, with the morphology of the involved cerebral cortex acting as the first major distinction.
