Perspectives on implementation of cognitive processing therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder in a tertiary mental health care setting in India: A qualitative study - 02/04/26
, Shantala Hegde a, Kesavan Muralidharan bAbstract |
Background |
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been extensively researched in developed countries and various trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapies (CBTs) have been found efficacious in treating PTSD. However, despite the availability of these well-established evidence-based interventions (EBIs), they are rarely implemented in routine clinical practice in many of the low and middle-income countries (LMICs), specifically in India.
Aim |
This qualitative study aimed to explore the perspectives of trauma-focused therapists and patients who underwent standard or modified Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD in an Indian tertiary mental health care setting.
Methods |
Data were collected from five trauma-focused therapists and four patients who underwent standard or modified CPT for PTSD using semi-structured interviews. The transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis.
Results |
The findings revealed 5 key themes: (1) nature of trauma and presentation of PTSD, (2) interventions for interpersonal trauma survivors with PTSD, (3) challenges for trauma-focused interventions, (4) favourable factors, and (5) suggestions.
Conclusion |
The findings will inform the implementation of CPT and other trauma-focused interventions in Indian tertiary mental health care settings.
