Anatomic dissection requires an understanding of anatomy that will be encountered intraoperatively and consists of identifying key anatomic landmarks, meticulous soft tissue handling, protecting pertinent neurovascular structures, and preserving tissue layers. This guide presents an overview of the principles of anatomic dissection as it pertains to the foot and ankle surgeon. Two anatomic dissection series are presented including a systematic approach to the first metatarsophalangeal joint and anterolateral exposure of the ankle joint. By reinforcing key anatomic landmarks and a layered dissection strategy, this guide serves as a practical foundation for both cadaveric study and optimizing surgical outcomes.
