Management of patients undergoing elective foot and ankle surgery largely depends on the type of surgery and the patient's medical history. A variety of surgical procedures exist for symptomatic abnormalities, from simple soft tissue procedures to complicated bone and joint reconstructions. Optimal outcomes rely on appropriate knowledge of the selected procedures and prevention or treatment of possible complications by the entire medical and surgical team involved in the patient's care. The authors discuss perioperative care with representative cases illustrating common procedures of the foot and ankle.
