External compression by a rib that caused a pseudolesion at virtual colonoscopy - 16/08/11
| Commentary Although intra-abdominal structures outside the colon (eg, liver, spleen, aorta, and loops of bowel) are known to compress the colon in a way that may simulate the appearance of focal neoplasms during 3D review with virtual colonoscopy, external compression by a lower rib is distinctly unusual. Such “pseudolesions” generally occur in thin persons. Given that colonic compression by a rib may only manifest in the prone position, it is most likely to be observed during virtual colonoscopy, which includes CT scanning in both supine and prone positions. Henry Miller said, “The moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.” The world of virtual imaging is only beginning to be seen.
