| Commentary In this particular case, a polished gemstone was cleverly removed after its ingestion by a patient who was mentally retarded. Need all stomach stones be removed? In humans, gallstones may fistulize into the stomach and become impacted in the pylorus, causing gastric outlet obstruction, the so-called Bouveret’s syndrome. Gastroliths may serve a beneficial function, however, and are well recorded in extinct plesiosaurs as well as marine reptiles, sharks, and emperor penguins. Probably purposefully ingested, because these vertebrates feed on river and ocean bottoms, they likely function as a gastric “mill” to aid digestion or as ballast to help keep the animals submerged.
