Rare colonic tumor causing intussusception - 16/08/11
| Commentary Only 5% of cases of intussusception occurs in adults; most involve the small intestine and are benign, whereas colonic intussusceptions are usually malignant. In adults, the classic triad of intussusception (pain, vomiting, and rectal bleeding) is only seen in 15% to 20% of cases. An abdominal mass is seen in 24% to 42% of cases and may be associated with an empty area in the abdomen where the colon resided before becoming the intussusceptum (Dance’s sign). Angiosarcoma is an aggressive tumor, with a poor prognosis. Lawrence J. Brandt, MD Associate Editor of Focal Points |
