Chronic Pain and Thoracic Surgery - 18/08/11

One of the most troublesome complications of thoracic surgery is the development of chronic postthoracotomy pain. Chronic pain differs from early postoperative pain not only in its incidence, but also in terms of its pathophysiology and treatment strategies. Efforts have been made to define potential surgical considerations that might decrease the incidence of chronic pain. Studies have examined the role of preemptive analgesia and thoracic epidural analgesia in the potential prophylaxis against the development of chronic postthoracotomy pain. A combination of pharmacologic, behavioral, and procedural interventions may be employed in treatment.
