The critical care of a complicated postoperative thoracic surgical patient has undergone significant developments since the 1990's. As critical care outcomes research has flourished, so has the application of evidence-based principles to critical care. The authors show many of these principles by presenting the case of a complicated, thoracic surgical patient, then explore many of these new developments in critical care.
