This article describes the impact of modern imaging techniques on preoperative airway evaluation, discusses airway-related morbidity and mortality and the American Society of Anesthesiologists' Difficult Airway Guidelines, and reviews developments in airway management that have significantly improved the quality and safety of anesthesia in patients with respiratory problems. The focus is on the tremendous impact of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) and the flexible fiberscope in clinical practice.
