Steroid Phobia and Adherence—Problems, Solutions, Impact on Benefit/Risk Profile - 18/08/11

Résumé |
Medication adherence is one of the biggest challenges health providers face. Patients are generally reluctant to take medications for various reasons, and this seems to be especially true for inhaled steroids. Systemic steroids have a long list of known adverse effects, and this seems to be an important reason why many individuals are reluctant to use steroid-containing medications. This article reviews the literature regarding steroid adherence, with a special focus placed on inhaled steroids. The role of environmental and social factors, such as mass media and the Internet, is explored. Based on the literature and personal experience, this article outlines strategies that may be helpful when working with patients who are reluctant to use steroid-containing medications.
