Colon varices as a source for lower-GI bleeding - 19/08/11

| Commentary Dilated veins (ie, varices) may occur throughout the GI tract independent of portal hypertension. Sources of nonportal hypertension-associated dilated veins include arteriovenous malformations and fistulae, local venous obstruction, and anatomic anomalies as seen with Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome. In some patients, as this case illustrates, extensive varices are without clear explanation, although the role of the gynecologic surgery may be questioned. In general, postsurgical varices are a consequence of surgical trauma, fistulization, or portosystemic collateralization in a patient with portal hypertension. Lawrence J.
