Light treatment modalities for atopic dermatitis - 01/09/11

Developments in phototherapy have resulted in a wide range of treatment options for atopic dermatitis, all of which have been found to be as effective as monotherapy or as an adjunct to other anti-inflammatory agents such as topical steroids. The newer modalities (i.e., UVA1, NB-UVB) have provided a better understanding of the mechanism by which phototherapy exerts its action at the cellular level. Factors to be considered in selecting a specific phototherapeutic modality include the severity of the disease, patient characteristics, risks, side effects, and practical issues such as cost of the procedure and accessibility of the light source.
