Pneumonia complicates 0.04% to 1.0% of all pregnancies and represents a significant concern for the pregnant woman.33 Cardiopulmonary adaptations of pregnancy reduce respiratory and cardiac reserve and, in the setting of pneumonia, can lead to maternal decompensation. Such decompensation can culminate in fetal compromise, preterm labor, and delivery. This article reviews the incidence, etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and complications related to pneumonia in pregnancy.
