Cleansing is an important part of everyday life throughout the animal kingdom. For most species, cleansing serves the purely functional role of removing dirt and other unwanted substances from the body's surface. Among humans, cleansing has frequently taken on significance beyond the simple act of dirt removal. For example, cleansing, or the prohibition thereof, has been an integral part of religious ceremony and belief throughout human history. More recently, the act of cleansing has been promoted as a means of relaxation and escape from the cares of everyday life and as a way to improve the skin's health and appearance.3, 12, 20, 44 Manufacturers have provided consumers with a dizzying array of product choices composed of different colors, scents, and a variety of ingredients purported to provide skin benefits. New product forms have been introduced, and although cleansing bars still predominate, the growing popularity of liquid soaps and body washes signals an important change in the skin cleanser market.
