Laparoscopic sterilization was the breakthrough procedure that showed the utility of surgical laparoscopy. Next, laparoscopy made an impact on gynecologic surgery by reducing the need for laparotomy in treatment of endometriosis, pelvic adhesions, and ectopic pregnancy. The technical feasibility of performing hysterectomy with laparoscopic assistance was first shown in 1989 by Reich et al,^{38 Reich H., DeCaprio J., McGlynn F. Expansion of the types of procedures done with laparoscopic assistance has been made possible by improvements in video endoscopy. Xenon vapor bulbs, which provide excellent illumination; the three-chip camera, which separates red, green, and blue colors; and the high-definition monitor, which significantly enhances image quality, are a few of the major developments. An array of laparoscopic surgical instruments has allowed surgeons to perform ever-more sophisticated procedures endoscopically. Laparoscopy, fueled by broadened indications and refinement of surgical technique, has become the most commonly performed surgery in the United States.
