The pathophysiology of abnormal uterine bleeding depends on the patient's age. This article presents the possible causes of abnormal bleeding, using an age-based approach. Recommendations for patient evaluation are given, and the value of the various diagnostic measures is discussed. The options for nonsurgical management are also presented. Determining the underlying cause of a patient's abnormal bleeding is key to successful treatment, whether medical or surgical.
