Broadly stated, the primary goal of acute pain management is to “improve patient outcome.” This begins with providing effective pain control but also includes increasing patient and parental satisfaction, minimizing therapy induced side effects, facilitating recovery, and shortening hospital stay.
This article describes the anatomic basis of pain perception, methods of pain assessment, and an overview of techniques of providing optimal analgesia following acute injury, illness, or surgery.
