ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER IN ADOLESCENTS : Common Pediatric Concerns - 07/09/11
Résumé |
Primary care pediatricians are faced with an increasing number of adolescents who present in their practices for diagnosis and treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The problems experienced by children with ADHD increase exponentially as these children move into adolescence. The purpose of this article is to address common concerns about ADHD in adolescence expressed by practicing pediatricians. Four issues are addressed: (1) What is the natural prognostic course of ADHD as children move into adolescence? (2) Are there individuals who present with ADHD for the first time in adolescence, and what do they look like? (3) What should the pediatrician do differently to manage children with ADHD as they move into the teenage years? (4) What additional problems may develop in the adolescent with ADHD, and how should the pediatrician address these problems?
