FOURNIER'S DISEASE - 07/09/11
Résumé |
In 1883 Fournier20 described an idiopathic rapidly progressing necrotizing fasciitis of the penis and scrotum in five otherwise healthy young males. Since that time, approximately 750 additional cases of Fournier's gangrene have been reported in the literature. These additional descriptions have necessitated redefining the disease. In most cases of Fournier's gangrene, a cause can now be found. The age group affected ranges from infancy to old age. Fournier's gangrene has also been described in women.39 The syndrome is now recognized as a synergistic, polymicrobial, necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum, scrotum, and penis usually from genitourinary, colorectal, or idiopathic sources.3, 27, 33, 39
