DYNAMIC ENDOCRINE TESTING : The Mayo Clinic Model - 10/09/11
Résumé |
Testing of endocrine function is a cornerstone of the practice of endocrinology. This article provides information on the Mayo Clinic model for an endocrine testing center (ETC). Modifications of this model should be applicable to any institution or endocrine practice. Topics discussed include how to assess the need for an ETC, the physical makeup of such a center, and specific protocols for endocrine tests. In addition, the history of dynamic endocrine testing at the Mayo Clinic is reviewed.
An ETC is essential for the comprehensive evaluation of patients with complex glandular disorders. Standardization of provocative endocrine testing procedures is necessary for obtaining valid results. These procedures provide endocrinologists with valuable information about the status of the hormonal axis being tested. The importance of a centralized area for standardized testing became evident at the Mayo Clinic in the early 1970s, and an outpatient area for dynamic endocrine testing was developed.
