Internal or occult rectal prolapse does not extend beyond the anal canal; some clinicians believe that this is a precursor of complete prolapse. Complete rectal prolapse is an intussusception that extends beyond the anus. Rectal prolapse has been known since antiquity. Despite this, its cause is still not completely understood, and there is considerable disagreement as to which operative repair is best. More than 100 procedures have been described for the treatment of rectal prolapse, and dozens are still in use. For example, the Delorme repair was first described in 1900.<sup>8 Delorme E.
