The term drug dependence refers to psychic dependence (addiction), physical dependence, or both, in someone who administers a drug periodically or continously.2 The drug may or may not be legally available. Most of the major categories of abused drugs (Table 1) are associated with stroke, occlusive and hemorrhagic, and a variety of mechanisms are implicated, including endocarditis, meningitis, foreign body embolism, accelerated atherosclerosis, platelet and coagulation factor abnormalities, hypertension, and cerebral vasospasm.3, 40 With some agents, stroke has been attributed to immune-mediated vasculitis.
