Traditionally, imaging of the abdomen in children has been performed by plain film radiography and barium contrast studies. In many clinical situations, this approach has been modified or replaced by ultrasound examination. A review of imaging of the infant with vomiting with an emphasis on malrotation and hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and the investigation of children with suspected intussusception is used to illustrate controversies and evolving strategies for imaging in children.
