Sleep Eating - 02/11/11

Résumé |
Pathologic sleep eating, known as sleep-related eating disorder (SRED), is characterized by disordered nocturnal eating that arises from sleep. This disruption in the nocturnal fast can result in adverse health consequences such as inadequate sleep maintenance, weight gain, the consumption of inedible substances, or sleep-related injury. The dysfunctional eating may occur in the setting of sedative-hypnotic medications, in particular the widely prescribed benzodiazepine receptor agonists such as zolpidem, frequently inducing amnesia. SRED is often associated with other sleep disorders, in particular restless legs syndrome, and may be a nonmotor manifestation of this condition.
