Stimulants and other pharmacologic treatments are first-line and gold standard treatments for many of the hypersomnias, including narcolepsy. However, many patients with hypersomnia may have difficulty adhering to stimulants, achieve only moderate improvements in alertness with pharmacotherapy alone, or prefer adjunctive behavioral strategies to manage their sleepiness. Thus, the most comprehensive treatment approach for patients with hypersomnia may involve both medication and behavioral components. This article focuses on the behavioral and psychological therapies for hypersomnolence that can be considered independent or adjunctive interventions.
