The American Heart Association has identified adherence as an integral component of heart failure self-care. Unfortunately, adherence to medication, diet, and exercise regimens historically has been poor. This review discusses relevant literature related to poor adherence in several therapeutic domains, including factors contributing to poor adherence, interventions designed to improve adherence, and heart failure self-management programs.
