La prothèse auditive conventionnelle a bénéficié des progrès de la miniaturisation électronique et surtout du traitement numérique du signal. Le prescripteur doit connaître ces améliorations, les contraintes anatomiques et acoustiques liées à la prothèse, les possibilités éventuelles de réhabilitation chirurgicale ainsi que les indications des autres techniques de réhabilitation auditive (voie osseuse, implant d'oreille moyenne, implant cochléaire). La prescription d'une prothèse auditive doit se faire dans un cadre précis : anamnèse, examen clinique, bilan audiométrique, choix de la prothèse. La prise en charge optimale d'un appareillage de l'enfant s'effectue dans le cadre d'un réseau adapté (ORL spécialisé, audiophonologie, audioprothésiste qualifié, orthophoniste…).
