MRI Conditionally Safe Pacemakers : Design and Technology Considerations - 28/05/14

MRI traditionally has been contraindicated in patients with implantable cardiac pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). Studies have demonstrated, however, that MRI can be performed safely in selected patients with conventional devices. Given the high lifetime likelihood of a person requiring MRI scanning, new MRI-conditional pacemakers and ICDs have been developed for improved safety in the MRI environment. These devices have been tested and studied mainly in 1.5-T field strength MRI; hence, their use should be limited to that environment. This review discusses the literature regarding the safety of conventional implantable cardiac devices in the MRI environment and the benefits and limitations of new MRI-conditional devices.
