New Approaches to Decrease Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Infections - 28/05/14

The use of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has increased rapidly over the past 2 decades due to landmark clinical trials and expanding indications for use. As devices are implanted in increasingly complex patients with multiple comorbidities, the incidence of CIED infections has outpaced the growth in new CIED systems and presents a major and preventable complication. Careful antimicrobial stewardship at the time of implantation is the cornerstone of preventing CIED infections. Specific strategies to prevent infections have been evaluated, and evidence-based methods are reviewed here.
