High-grade astrocytomas are the most common primary brain tumors in adults. Until recently, there has been little progress in the treatment of these tumors. Promising new therapies, however, are emerging based on technologic advances in surgery and radiotherapy; improved understanding of the molecular, cellular, and immunobiologic aspects of these tumors; and advances in gene therapy. This article reviews some of the advances that have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of high-grade astrocytomas.
