CONTROVERSIAL FORMS OF IMMUNOTHERAPY - 29/06/22
SUMMARY |
Allergen immunotherapy is a well-established treatment for certain forms of allergy. Numerous properly controlled studies document its efficacy. There are no known long-term adverse consequences, and the immediate side effects and dangers are known and can be minimized when the treatment is used properly. There is a clear need to find ways to enhance its efficacy and perhaps its use in conditions such as food anaphylaxis. There is a need to reduce the risk of life-threatening systemic reactions, cost, and inconvenience. This will occur only with scientifically rigorous basic research and controlled clinical trials. Clinical use of unconventional immunotherapy procedures in practice is unwarranted. It is necessary for physicians who use such treatments to know whether the necessary studies are available showing evidence of efficacy and safety superior to conventional immunotherapy. Such studies are the responsibility of those who propose new treatments.
