New imaging modalities, surgical techniques, and an explosion in knowledge from scientific and genetic research make the practice of retina ever changing, and stresses and demands in health care provide additional challenges to the vitreoretinal specialist.

Retinal Detachments addresses the needs of the busy vitreoretinal surgeon caring for both the adult and pediatric patient. This comprehensive compendium written by an accomplished group of vitreoretinal retinal surgeons, led by Dr. Georges Caputo, is presented in 4 sections with instructive diagrams throughout that address pathogenesis and treatment. The first section provides fundamental knowledge of the embryology, anatomy, and physiology of the retina and vitreous and extends from the normal to the pathologic genesis of retinal breaks, detachments, and vitreous conditions, such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy. This special section addresses a segment of the population with unique needs in surgical evaluation, diagnosis and management that are separate from the adult patient, thus making Retinal Detachments of particular value.
