À travers l’histoire singulière d’un patient atteint d’une forme sévère de sclérose en plaques, hospitalisé à deux mois d’intervalle, nous tenterons d’appréhender les différents mouvements psychiques, inhérents à l’aggravation de la maladie. Dans une tentative de négociation avec la maladie, ce patient fournit des indices, révélateurs d’un travail de renoncement de certains aspects de soi. Ces deux hospitalisations offrent la possibilité d’illustrer l’évolution du patient confronté au séisme émotionnel et à la vacillation identitaire imposés par la modification de son image, conséquente à la réapparition de la maladie sous forme de poussée. Nous proposons de décrire le rôle du psychologue dans sa tentative de déchiffrage de ces indices et du soutien psychologique lors de l’assomption d’une nouvelle image de soi.

The singular story of a patient suffering from a severe type of multiple sclerosis and who was hospitalized twice with an interval of two months provided us with the occasion to apprehend the different psychological processes related to worsening illness. Trying to cope with his illness, the patient presented indications of a renunciation process concerning certain aspects of his self-image. During these two hospitalizations the patient illustrated the effect of the disease course on his emotional and psychological status. We observed shattered emotions and vacillation in self-identity imposed by changes in his self-image subsequent to disease recurrence. We describe the role of the psychologist attempting to decode these indications and to provide the psychological support needed when assuming a new self-image.
