Le terme insight a connu en psychopathologie un destin singulier. À partir de ses origines allemandes et anglaises, il signifiait « perception, intuition » et c'est en ce sens qu'il a été utilisé dans la psychiatrie de langue anglaise et aussi dans l'oeuvre de Freud lui-même. C'est par un faux-sens que la clinique française, particulièrement psychanalytique, lui a conféré la signification d'une perception de soi, d'un regard tourné vers l'intérieur. De ce faux-sens est née une clinique particulièrement riche dont il est fait ici une brève description.

The meaning of the word “insight” has shifted with the importation in French of an English word coming from the German “Einsicht”. This word which means perception, intuition, has been used in German and English psychiatric traditions. Freud himself used the word in this meaning, so it is by a wrong interpretation that the French tradition used the word as expressing the sense of an inner perception, a view turned toward psychic experience. From this wrong interpretation is issued a rich clinical approach which is shortly presented in this contribution.
