A review of the current state of orthodontic bonding. Excessive bond failures, more than a total of 3-5%, appears to be the rule rather than the exception. Yet after more than 30 years of orthodontic bonding history it is clear that achieving a bonding success rate of 95% or more is both doable and practical. The primary reason that most offices do not enjoy a bare minimum bond failure rate is not directly due to the bonding adhesive selected. It is not directly related to the bracket or the technology… It is most often the operator and bonding technique used. Because of the high costs of replacing excessive bond failures, it is essential for both good practice management and quality patient care to keep bond failures to a bare minimum.
