• | Aspiration pneumonia is defined by the combination of a positive diagnosis of pneumonia and a presumptive etiological diagnosis of aspiration. |
• | Acute respiratory presentation of chemical pneumonitis does not meet the definition of aspiration pneumonia. |
• | It is recommended to perform a complementary imaging test to confirm the diagnosis of aspiration pneumonia, preferably a chest CT-scan. |
• | The first-line treatment is amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (oral or intravenous) for 5 days in the event of a favorable clinical course. |
• | Swallowing disorders must be systematically investigated in order to implement personalized measures to prevent recurrence. |
