Nurses in surgical settings have responsibility for protecting patient and staff safety on a tight budget. This responsibility includes having current knowledge of the process, efficacy, safety, and cost of a variety of sterilization methods. Using low-temperature sterilization technologies and following regulatory mandates pose challenges for the perioperative nurse. This article provides information to guide the nurse in making informed decisions concerning low-temperature sterilization of surgical instrument processing.
