Currently, many screening options are available for evaluation of the genetic health of the fetus, with screening choices for Down syndrome that are complex in risk and benefit estimations. Health care providers have the responsibility of providing adequate counseling, access, and the most robust screening choices for patients. Comparative analyses of the various screening options to women interested in prenatal diagnosis indicate that at the screen positive rate of 5%, all screening approaches have high detection rates and can be offered to patients based on the availability of resources in the community and the gestational age during prenatal care.
