Context: Bracket loss is a major complication in lingual orthodontic treatment. New bracket designs have been proposed not only to reduce the bracket loss rate but also to make rebonding easier and more precise.
Material and method: Bracket loss and rebonding were analysed at the DUOLG (Diplôme Universitaire d’Orthodontie Linguale, Garancière). Nine doctors, all beginners in lingual orthodontics, collected data of patients, number of bonded and rebonded brackets as well as circumstances of breakage over two years.
Results and conclusion: 8% of all bonded brackets had to be rebonded, representing 2 brackets per patient. Each doctor who participated had loss of at least one bracket but there were 8 patients out of 36 who had no breakage. The new, individually designed Incognito bracket seems to present an excellent bonding quality.
