The Freudian metaphor of the crystal to characterize the notion of structure as it is used in psychoanalytic psychopathology is discussed taking into account the phenomenon of crystalline plasticity. A perfect crystal is indeformable and, under the effect of a sufficient stress, it can only break by cleavage. But if it contains some defects, the crystal is capable of a plasticity that modifies its internal structure by the multiplication of its dislocations. This structural dynamics leaves traces whose shape depends on the orientation relation of the crystal to the external stress. The anisotropic structures that result from this interaction can be characterized in terms of fragility or ductility regarding subsequent stresses. For a polycrystal such as those of our natural world, characterized by an aggregate of crystallites disoriented with respect to each other, the crystalline plasticity is manifested by an arrangement of parts with different properties and which compose its “texture”. Taken in a metaphorical way for a model of the psyche, the notion of “texture” thus refers to a structuration that is no longer dichotomous but of a great variety, like a singular text that is updated in a lively manner according to the encounters with the real world.
