La prévention du risque infectieux associe les précautions standard et les précautions complémentaires qui se déclinent en isolement septique et protecteur. L’isolement septique a pour objet de prévenir le risque de transmission croisée d’un patient infecté vers un autre patient, un soignant ou un visiteur non infecté. L’isolement protecteur consiste à prévenir la transmission d’un agent potentiellement infectieux à un patient immunodéprimé.

The prevention of the infection risk combines standard precautions and complementary precautions which include septic and protective isolation. The aim of septic isolation is to prevent the risk of cross-transmission between an infected patient and another noninfected patient, caregiver or visitor. Protective isolation consists in preventing the transmission of a potentially infectious agent to an immunocompromised patient.
