Eliminate fake news! - 19/02/26
Riassunto |
Primary and secondary lymphedema remain poorly understood by patients and healthcare professionals. They are chronic conditions for which there is currently no cure. Although research on lymphedema is active, progress is slow and there have been no major developments for patients. It is normal in this situation for numerous treatments or solutions to be proposed, mainly without rigorous clinical evaluation. Indeed, lymphedema treatment remains constraining and mainly on compression therapy, the search for a radical and/or definitive solution is legitimate, amplified by social media. Accurate information is mixed with misinformation (false information not created with the intention of causing harm) without any hierarchy to help sort it out. The goal is not to eliminate fake news about lymphedema and its treatment, but rather to teach patients how to select the right information. There are many ways to explore: better explanation of the condition by healthcare professionals, an educational approach with therapeutic education program, fact sheets developed by learned societies, consultation of official websites on the subject (e.g., INCa, www.cancer.fr/ ), patient associations, cross-referencing information from different sources, etc. Among recent concepts, health literacy is an important element. This refers to the ability to search for, sort through, and evaluate health information, and to have a sufficient understanding of it to actively manage their own health.
