Background and Aims |
The need for additional treatment of patients with pathological (p)T1a–muscularis mucosa (MM) (pT1a–MM) esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) without lymphovascular invasion (LVI) after endoscopic resection (ER) remains unclear because of the lack of large-scale studies with long-term follow-up. Thus, observations were generally selected as the community standard. We aimed to clarify the long-term outcomes for this patient group.
Methods |
Patients with pT1a–MM ESCC without LVI after ER were retrospectively recruited from 47 institutions between 2008 and 2015. The cumulative recurrence rate (CRR), overall survival (OS), and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were investigated.
Results |
Of the 540 patients included, 485 underwent observation, 45 received chemoradiotherapy (CRT), and 10 underwent surgery. The 5-year CRR, OS, and RFS rates for the observation, CRT, and surgery groups were 4.9%, 92.7%, and 89.6%; 2.2%, 93.3%, and 91.1%; and 10.0%, 100%, and 90.0%, respectively.
Conclusions |
Although CRR was not negligible, the current strategy of observation may be a reasonable option given the low recurrence risk.
